The NFL preseason has begun in earnest! The Detroit Lions and New York Giants will play their preseason openers at MetLife Stadium tonight. Even though quarterback Jared Goff and many other starters won’t be playing, this game is important for several players who are competing for roster spots and important positions.
- The Battle of the Backup QB
To support Goff, Nate Sudfeld and Hendon Hooker will probably split the game, with each player receiving a half to show off their abilities. After his ACL injury almost two years ago, Hooker will be playing in his first game this season. He will have to show that he can call plays effectively and execute the offense with fluidity.
- Chart of Wide Receiver Depth
The roles of fourth and possibly fifth receivers are up for grabs, but the top three receiver places are certain. While Kaden Davis and Daurice Fountain have made an impression in camp, Donovan Peoples-Jones, who was acquired the previous season, is also a possibility. These receivers have the opportunity to present a compelling case for themselves tonight.
- The third quarterback
Jermar Jefferson, a veteran, and rookie Sione Vaki will challenge incumbent third running back Craig Reynolds. Reynolds has had a good camp, but the coaching staff is taking notice of Jefferson because of his remarkable improvement. These backs will be involved in a lot of action as they compete for the final roster place.
4. Defensive Line Depth, Fourth
This game provides an insight into the caliber of Detroit’s defensive line, as important starters are probably sitting out. Watch the edge rushers as the Lions look on Aidan Hutchinson for more output. The amount of playing time Levi Onwuzurike might get will be telling; if he doesn’t, he’s probably locked into a big role. James Houston, Mitchell Agude, Mekhi Wingo, and Mathieu Betts are some players to watch.
- The Kicking Performance of Jake Bates
With rain and wind predicted in New Jersey, Jake Bates has a critical chance to demonstrate his consistency following a volatile training camp. Is he capable of consistently making short-field goals and extra points? His evaluation will heavily consider this and his ability to place kickoffs tactically in light of the new regulations.
Past the Scoreboard
Recall that the focus of preseason games is mostly on player development and individual performances rather than the ultimate score. We’ll learn much about the team’s depth and potential going into the regular season as these Lions are on the field.
