Stetson Bennett’s Comeback Drive Stuns Cowboys, Rams Win 13-12

From Four Sacks to Glory at the Fourth Level

Arriving back on the field following a year off, Stetson Bennett had a difficult start to his first preseason matchup with the Los Angeles Rams. With four sacks and four interceptions, the quarterback who guided Georgia to consecutive national titles appeared to be a thing of the past.

But in a shocking turn of events, Bennett produced a drive that won the game in the closing minutes, echoing his valiant actions throughout his time in college. With only four seconds left, Bennett broke free from pressure and overcame his previous setbacks to connect with Miller Forristall on a 6-yard touchdown pass, giving the Rams a thrilling 13-12 victory over the Dallas Cowboys.

A Viral-Cracking Game

“It was probably the strangest game I’ve ever played in,” Bennett, a 224-yard passer who completed 24 of 38 passes, said. “But I promised myself that today would be our last battle. My objective was to execute the offense accurately and avoid mental errors.”

Bennett showed resiliency despite the four interceptions by guiding the Rams on a 13-play, 70-yard drive in the closing seconds. “There were some mistakes,” he said, “but ultimately, we needed to get the ball into the end zone or lose, and I think everyone fought hard to make that happen.”

Bennett’s Confidence in McVay

Even after seeing Bennett struggle, head coach Sean McVay of the Rams never lost faith in his quarterback’s ability to guide the team to victory. “Clearly, we want to minimize turnovers, but it didn’t really surprise me,” McVay said. As instructors, we conversed via the headsets. Like, what do you know? Stetson performed a fantastic job, and he’s the kind of player that can lead us to a touchdown that wins the game.”

Outstanding Acts

Wide receiver Jordan Whittington, who had six grabs for 74 yards, and rookie kicker Joshua Karty, who made two field goals for the Rams, were both recognized by McVay for their contributions.

Lance’s Dallas Debut

Trey Lance made his debut for the Cowboys, passing for 188 yards. Lance, who was acquired by the Cowboys in August of last year and was the third overall choice by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2021 draft, did not play in any games.

“I believe that experience has taught me a lot of lessons. I’ve played with other guys before. “It’s wonderful to sense the enthusiasm in the meeting,” Lance said. But he also said, “I definitely left some plays out there from the first quarter to the fourth,” in acknowledgment of the opportunities lost. It’s never a good feeling to have the ball for four more possessions and not score a touchdown.

A Missed Opportunity Game

Both teams missed a lot of opportunities during the game, and the Cowboys had to settle for four field goals from Brandon Aubrey. Karty failed to convert a 28-yard field goal attempt in the last minutes, demonstrating the Rams’ inability to take advantage of their opportunities.

In the end, Bennett’s tenacity and his capacity to perform when it mattered most decided the outcome, helping the Rams to an exciting preseason triumph.

Gazing Forward

In their upcoming preseason matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers, the Rams will aim to build on their victory. To play the Raiders, the Cowboys will travel to Las Vegas.
